Looking forward to the DEFRA kerbside collections response

We are looking forward to the publication of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ response to its consultation on consistent kerbside collections, expected soon.

For several years, we have continuously called for the inclusion on food and drinks cartons within the core list of materials for kerbside collection. Food and drink cartons are made from a majority of sustainably-sourced fibre materials and are fully recyclable; but increasing collection is a crucial step towards increasing the volume of cartons recycled.

The food and beverage carton industry has already taken proactive steps in developing the infrastructure for collection. Now is the time for UK Government to take bold and decisive action to increase the collection and recycling of cartons, reduce waste, and protect the environment.

Our members are currently preparing for more consistent collections and carton recycling once the Government publishes its Consistency in Household and Business Recycling consultation response.

Although the timelines for implementation remain unclear, we anticipate that DEFRA will include food and drink cartons in the core materials for kerbside collection. We are actively getting ready for these changes.

ACE UK will be sharing more information following the publication of DEFRA’s consultation response. If you would like to learn more, please contact us through: enquiries@ace-uk.co.uk
